I. The Burden

And it came to pass in those days, that a mighty king arose, who knew not Joseph and his brethren; he said unto the children of Israel: "Ye are my servants no more." And so the Hebrew slaves labored under the yoke of their oppressors, groaning beneath the burden of their affliction.

II. The Bondage

For four hundred years they toiled, generation after generation, until the time had come for them to be released from their bondage. But they knew not when nor how this redemption would come. And the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord, and the Lord heard their groaning.

III. The Call

And the Lord called unto Moses, saying: "Go unto Pharaoh and tell him to let my people go." So Moses went in unto Pharaoh, but he would not hearken unto the voice of the Lord. And the Lord said unto Moses: "Behold, I will smite Egypt with all manner of plagues; that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son's and of thy son's son's people how I have wrought marvelous signs and wonders."

IV. The Plagues

And it came to pass, as the Lord had said unto Moses: "I will bring forth plagues upon Egypt, great and sore, that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth." And the first plague was of blood; the second of frogs; the third of lice; the fourth of wild beasts; the fifth of pestilence; the sixth of boils; the seventh of hail; the eighth of locusts; the ninth of darkness; and the tenth of the slaying of the firstborn.

V. The Passover

And the Lord said unto Moses: "I will smite Egypt with all manner of plagues, but I will deliver my people from their bondage." And so it was that on the night when the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, there arose a great cry among the Hebrew slaves.

VI. The Exodus

And the children of Israel went out with a high hand and with a mighty hand, taking none of the treasures of Egypt; for the Egyptians had favored them, that they might let them go, and they despoiled the Egyptians. And the Lord said unto Moses: "Go in unto Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart, and he will let you go."

VII. The Red Sea Crossing

And when Pharaoh saw the children of Israel marching out with a high hand, he pursued after them with chariots and horsemen, even all his hosts. And the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord; and they looked behind them, and behold, the Egyptians drew nigh with their hosts. And the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord, saying: "Let not Pharaoh's chariots come upon us, neither let the Egyptians overtake us."

VIII. The Divine Intervention

And it came to pass that the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land; and the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

And the Lord said unto Moses: "Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I make a covenant with thee and with Israel." And so it was that Moses wrote down the laws and commandments which the Lord had given unto him, and he gave them unto the children of Israel.

XXII. The Sabbath

And the Lord said unto Moses: "Remember that thou keep my sabbaths; for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you."
