Ruth and Boaz: The Fulfillment of Justice

Published: 2040-02-07 14 min read 2647 words

I. The Burden

In the land of Judah, there dwelt a man named Elimelech, who lived in Bethlehem with his wife Naomi and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion. When a great famine came upon the land, they journeyed to the land of Moab, seeking sustenance for their family. In Moab, Elimelech died, leaving behind a widow and her two sons.

II. The Call of Providence

The years passed, and Naomi's sons also perished. With no husband or son to provide for them, Ruth, Naomi's daughter-in-law, remained steadfast in her loyalty. She vowed to return with Naomi to Bethlehem, declaring, "Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for wherever thou goest, I will go; and wherever thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God."

III. The Field of Harvest

Upon their arrival in Bethlehem, Ruth went out to glean in the fields, where Boaz, a mighty man of valor, had planted. As she worked, Boaz noticed her and instructed his reapers to leave some grain for her to gather. Ruth was grateful for this kindness, but little did she know that her act of humility would open the door to redemption.

IV. The Redeemer's Choice

Boaz learned of Ruth's loyalty to Naomi and her devotion to God. He felt compassion for them both and decided to redeem Ruth as his wife, thus fulfilling the Law. However, there was a closer kinsman who had the right of redemption before Boaz. Boaz went to this man and proposed that he take Ruth as his wife, but the man declined, saying, "I will not do so, for I would diminish my estate if I should marry her."

V. The Redeemer's Action

With the rejection of the nearer kinsman, Boaz took on the responsibility of redeeming Ruth himself. He went to the city gate and announced his intention to marry her, stating that he would perform the duties of a kinsman-redeemer for her and Naomi. The elders of Bethlehem praised God's providence in this matter, and the people blessed Boaz and Ruth.

VI. The Redeemer's Promise

Boaz promised to care for Ruth and Naomi, providing them with sustenance and protection. He vowed that their God would be his God, and he would uphold the covenant of redemption on their behalf. As they walked in faith together, they knew that God's hand was upon them.

VII. The Redeemer's Blessing

In due time, Ruth bore a son to Boaz, who named him Obed. "This child shall be called a Nazarene," said Boaz, for he would grow up to be the ancestor of King David and eventually the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The people rejoiced at this sign from God, and their hearts were filled with joy and gratitude.

VIII. The Redeemer's Legacy

Ruth and Boaz lived out their days in peace and prosperity, bearing witness to the faithfulness of God. They taught their children and grandchildren the ways of righteousness, and their legacy continued for generations to come. And so it was that Ruth, once a widow and an outsider, became the mother of the lineage that would bring salvation to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
