I. The Burden

The Lord had placed this man before him as an opportunity for Elijah to demonstrate his faith and devotion. And so, Elijah called upon Yahweh to show Himself through fire from heaven.
III. The Answer
In response to Elijah's prayer, the heavens opened, and a great wind tore through the sky, shattering the rocks around them. Yet the Lord was not in the wind; nor was He in the earthquake that followed. Then came a fire, but Yahweh was not in the fire. Finally, there was the sound of sheer silence.
And it was then that Elijah heard a voice, gentle yet resolute: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" The prophet replied: "I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."
IV. The Blessing
In that moment of silence, Yahweh spoke: "Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord." And so, Elijah stood before the Lord as a servant, humbled by His presence. Suddenly, there was a great and powerful wind, tearing the mountains apart and shattering the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
Then, Elijah heard the voice of Yahweh: "Why are you here, Elijah?" And he replied: "I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."
V. The Sign
The Lord said to him: "Go back the way you came, and go to the Wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive there, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. Also, you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place."
And it was so. Elijah returned to the Wilderness of Damascus and carried out the divine will, anointing Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha. As he did so, he could feel the weight of his burden lifting, and a sense of purpose filling him.
VI. The Miracle
